BVS K 067: 9 Days Bird Safari

ABOUT

This safari package takes you to the four lakes in the Rift Valley. Sample the fresh water lakes L. Naivasha “Hell’s Gate Nat Park”; This Park is famous for its natural steaming geysers and a haven for birdwatchers. The walking/ hiking give one sense of freedom, open space and a clear view of wildlife. The cliffs are breeding grounds for vultures, Verreaux’s eagles, Augur buzzards and thousands of swifts. Over 120 species have been recorded here. L. Baringo, This is another fresh water lake in the rift valley and a bird watchers paradise; it has over 460 recorded bird species and home to hippos and crocodiles. And the salt-water lake birds of L. Nakuru National Park; In addition to the bird population of flamingos that carpet the lake, the Park has a fair share of wildlife including the endangered species such as black rhinos, Rothschild Giraffe and the Columbus monkeys. And L. Bogoria, a shallow soda lake hosting thousands of pink flamingos, a number of other birds and lesser kudu. Scalding hot springs and geysers at the southern end of the lake spurt and steam their alkaline waters. The bubbling of hot springs, hundreds of singing weaver birds and this is a bleeding ground foe over a million flamingos and feeding in the bluish water presents a rare scenic beauty.

The package also takes you to the western parts of Kenya into Kakamega (Rain Forest) National reserve; a canopy of natural beauty and home to over 300 bird species, 350 varieties of trees, 27 species of snakes, over 400 species of butterflies, insects and game watching. Here, walk into the dense rain forest filled with sweet melodious tunes from the hundred species of birds that call the forest home. A night on the shores of Lake Victoria. Finally we conclude our safari with Maasai Mara Game Reserve, “Jewel in the crown of Kenya’s tourism industry” is known for its big wildlife concentration all the year round, the Lions, Elephants, Rhinos, Leopards and Buffaloes and not forgetting the Big Cats.

On Arrival, you will be received at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport by our guide, for briefing before being transferred to the Hotel Which is ideally situated within the city centre for overnight stay in preparation for the start of the Safari.

Accommodation in this safari can be a combination of lodge and semi luxury camps on request. In case of emergency, We provide 24/7 Flying Doctors emergency evacuation to the nearest hospital. Our departures are daily, subject to minimum 2 persons booking.

TRAVEL PLAN

Day 1: Nairobi -Lake Naivasha

You will be picked up from your hotel and drive through the Limuru tea farms descending to the floor of the Great Rift Valley with a brief stop at the view point. Drive past Mt. Longonot (which is of volcanic origin). Arrive at Lake Naivasha by mid-morning for a bird-walk before lunch. Lunch is at the Lodge. Lake Naivasha being close to Nairobi (100 km) makes it a comfortable weekend-resort for professional and amateur bird-watchers. It was declared a bird sanctuary in 1967. Ospreys, fish eagles, herons, lily-trotters will be seen here among others. After lunch enjoy a refreshing boat cruise on the lake this area is famous for its bird life – a breeding ground for pelicans, fish eagles, cormorants among other wet land birds and hundreds of hippos, proceed to the crescent island where you will have a whole afternoon guided walk safari within the many animals of the plains, it is one of the few places in all Africa where you can wander on foot among herds of zebras, wildebeest, and giraffes (No predators no fences). Day 2: Lake Naivasha -Lake Nakuru National Park

We head for Lake Nakuru National Park after breakfast. The bird life here is world renown with over 400 bird species. The Park is regarded by many as the greatest bird spectacle on earth.
We arrive in the park by mid-morning, followed by lunch at the Lodge. This will be our chance to watch the great populations of Flamingos. They literally turn the lakeshores into a magnificent pink stretch! Cliff Chat, Verreaux’s Eagle, Tawny Eagle, Marabou Stork, White Pelicans etc will also be seen. We also have a good chance of seeing the white rhino, black rhino and Rothschild giraffe. Dinner and Overnight stay at the L. Nakuru Bontana hotel. Meal Plan {FB}.

Day 3: Lake Nakuru National Park – Lakes Baringo & Bogoria

After breakfast, drive to Lake Baringo. This is one of the two fresh water lakes in the rift valley and a bird watchers paradise. It has over 460 recorded bird species and is home to hippos and crocodiles. Check in for lunch at the Lodge. After lunch, proceed to a boat ride in the lake with a resident ornithologist. Day 4: Lakes Baringo & Bogoria

After breakfast, the resident ornithologist will take you for a bird-watching walk before returning to the Lodge for lunch. After lunch, proceed to the nearby Lake Bogoria. This lake is a shallow soda lake hosting thousands of pink flamingos; L. Baringo and L. Natron in Tanzania are the bleeding grounds for the flamingos. Scalding hot springs and geysers at the southern end of the lake gush and steam their alkaline waters. Day 5: Lakes Baringo & Bogoria – Kakamega (Rain Forest) National reserve

After a hearty breakfast say goodbye to your hosts and drive to Kakamega National Reserve. The forest is world renowned as home to several hundred species of birds including rare snake-eating birds, insects, monkeys and other mammals as well as countless tree species. Day 6: Kakamega (Rain Forest) National reserve -Kisumu

After breakfast, spend a full day at the Kakamega National Forest Reserve with bird walks accompanied by game wardens. After a full day exploring in the rain forest, a night will be spent on the shores of Lake Victoria. Dinner and overnight at the Sun Set hotel. Meal Plan {FB}.

Day 7: Kisumu-Masai Mara Game Reserve

After breakfast, drive past the extensive tea farms of Kericho, via Narok town to Masai Mara National Reserve. You will have a chance to compare notes as you sort out the various bird species that you add to your list. Mara has a good share of the ornithological paradise. Day 8: Full day in Masai Mara Game Reserve

Take an extensive game drive into the reserve covered with rolling grasslands dotted with acacia and hazy forested hills and river-line bush where the Mara River and its tributaries meander,
Masai Mara is considered by many to be Kenya’s finest game reserve, the 1510 sq Kms of this reserve adjoin Tanzania’s well-known Serengeti, forming one eco-system. The open rolling savannah grassland of the Mara is the home of numerous wildlife species including elephant, rhino, lion, cheetah, leopard, hyena, jackal, buffalo, eland, topis, impala, gazelle, warthog and zebra. From June to September, the annual Wildebeest migration takes place when thousands of these animals sweep across the plain and seek out new grazing areas, a full day game drive with picnic lunch at the hippo pool on the banks of the Mara River where the crossing of the Gnus [wildebeests] takes place while the killer crocodiles awaits. Day 9: Masai Mara-Nairobi

Have an early breakfast before exploring another different area of this park, this is to capture the early morning actions, return to the Lodge/camp for lunch, check out after lunch and depart for Nairobi arriving in the evening.
